Sci-Tech Empowers Agriculture: Qingtian Products Shine at Zhejiang Sci-Tech Week

The opening ceremony of the 2026 Zhejiang Session of National Science and Technology Week was held at Zhejiang Exhibition Hall on May 24. As one of the four representative regions in the province, Qingtian exhibited nine specialty agricultural products and technological achievements developed by its Science and Technology Commissioner team. The exhibition fully demonstrates how scientific and technological innovation drives the development of characteristic agriculture, bringing high-quality farm produce from this overseas Chinese hometown to the public.

Qingtian's booth drew large crowds, showcasing nine exhibits: Dongkui bayberries, oil-tea camellia products, handmade soap, honey, polygonatum, rice from rice-fish co-culture, Qingtian Imperial Tea, Xuande Imperial Chrysanthemum Tea and Qingtian Rice Vermicelli. Many visitors stopped to learn about the products and praised them highly after tasting and experiencing. Ye Meijun, a Science and Technology Commissioner, explained product features, planting techniques and processing technologies to merchants and visitors, illustrating how science and technology upgrades traditional agriculture and improves specialty product quality.

Chen Zhongfa, a Science and Technology Commissioner dispatched by Zhejiang Wanli University to Qingtian, said his team is rooted in rural fields and conducts technical research to solve local problems such as short agricultural industrial chains and low product added value. Through deep processing technologies, agricultural products like polygonatum, imperial chrysanthemum and oil-tea camellia have been developed into beverages, handmade soap and other products, effectively increasing their value and turning local specialties into high-value commodities.

Qingtian has implemented the Science and Technology Commissioner System since 2003, for 23 years. Over 440 person-times of provincial and municipal Science and Technology Commissioners have been stationed at the grassroots level. They have implemented 848 scientific and technological projects, introduced and promoted 1,251 new technologies and 1,841 new crop varieties, and solved 3,268 technical problems of all kinds. The local Science and Technology Bureau has been named Provincial Advanced Collective seven times. The number of its Science and Technology Commissioners selected as Provincial Outstanding Science and Technology Commissioners ranks among the top in Zhejiang.

Chen Zhongfa was named one of the 2025 Zhejiang Most Outstanding Science and Technology Workers. Qingtian has also become a pilot county for the provincial Science and Technology Mission Group, with technological services gradually expanding from agriculture to industry.

Currently, 46 provincial and municipal Science and Technology Commissioners from 13 universities and research institutes work in Qingtian. The county took the lead in Zhejiang to implement the Lifelong Science and Technology Commissioner System. By innovating working mechanisms, precisely matching industrial needs and tackling technical problems through team-based support, they provide strong support for the development of characteristic industries including bayberry, oil-tea camellia, tea and Chinese medicinal herbs.
